Problems to look out for if you Have Diabetes

While some people naturally have diabetes, there are a few things that you should watch out for. If you suffer from diabetes, and you haven’t been seeing your Kennewick dentist, there are a few things that you should certainly watch out for when it comes to this.

The first, is gum disease. Diabetes can lower the blood to the gums, which causes an increased risk for gum disease.  This is also increased if you have bad dental health before that.  there are two types out there gingivitis and periodontist.  Gingivitis is the less severe, but it can develop into the latter if not treated. Not only does it cut off the blood to the gums, but it can also reduce the resistance to infection, which puts the inflammation much higher.  Remember the longer the plaque remains on teeth, the more it can irritate the gums around the teeth, which can cause other issues.

If left untreated, it can cause periodontitis, which then affects the tissue and bone. Along with bleeding gums, you get bad breath that won’t go away, and it also changes the way your teeth fit when you bite.  It can also cause your teeth to loosen and fall out as a result of this.

Along with this though, while your body might be healing, it also can raise your blood sugar, which causes further problems for diabetics, so it’s something else to keep in mind.

Then there is dry mouth. If you or someone you know has diabetes, the first thing that they might talk about is dry mouth and a thirst.  This can be annoying, but it also leads to other issues. Diabetes will reduce the saliva production in the mouth, which makes your teeth more vulnerable to the decay that is there, and it can also cause gum disease. Saliva will help get rid of the plaque and tartar. The less saliva that is there, the more this will stick around.  You might also notice that you have a dry tongue and cracked lips, along with a hard time chewing, talking, and even swallowing.

You can go to your Kennewick dentist and ask them to put fluoride in your mouth in order to moisten and prevent tooth decay. Sugar-free mints and gum are also good with this.

If you do suffer from dry mouth, you should also avoid certain foods. Tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, salty, and even spicy foods can make the problem that much worse. You should make sure that you avoid these whenever possible.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you do suffer from diabetes.  The risks associated with this do make dental hygiene a necessity. The dental care for such patients must be done all the time to combat these issues and to give yourself the best oral health possible.

You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. This will keep the plaque buildup at minimum and remove the food particles that cause this. If you aren’t getting the full results, try getting an electric toothbrush to help with this.

You should also manage your diet.  Avoiding the foods that are high in sugar will control the oral health you have, along with diabetes.  You don’t want to have too much sugar in your diet anyways.

You should also tell your dentist about this as well. While you might have said it before, it bears much good in repeating this.  They’ll be able to give you the best care that they can to help with these needs.

Finally, schedule your visits.  For example, if you already do two, try doing another one just to help improve the quality of your oral care. By doing this, you’ll be able to watch your progress and the developments that go along with your mouth.
